Sadly, I have watched my own dogs suffer terribly with arthritis in their old age, and the feeling of helplessness was overwhelming. So when I heard about Canine Bowen Therapy I was immediately intrigued and signed up with The International School of Bowen Therapy. Qualifying as a Canine Bowen Therapist has been an amazing journey and my passion is to help as many dogs as possible live their best life, pain free and happy.
Firstly, it is important to note that I am not a veterinarian and Canine Bowen Therapy is a complementary therapy, I therefore recommend that you consult with your veterinarian for a diagnosis or check up before considering whether this therapy is appropriate for your dog.
Bowen therapy was developed by Thomas Ambrose Bowen in the 1950's. His reputation for working on animals was extensive as was his fame for working on humans. He applied the same principles of his human work to relieve animals of their pain and disability. He was a wonderfully compassionate therapist who forged a high reputation for himself in the Geelong region, West of Melbourne, Australia, where he was born, and beyond.
Canine Bowen Therapy is an extremely gentle, hands on complementary therapy working with muscles, ligaments and tendons cross-fibre to assist rehydration of the fascia (connective tissue) found throughout the body to help mobilisation, reduce pain and increase comfort. No instruments, oils, or anything other than my bare hands, respect, reassurance and compassion are used. Targeted sequences involve moves on specific points of the body over muscle insertions, trigger points and spinal reflex points. The moves impact not only muscles, tendons and ligaments but also joints, organs, the nervous system and lymphatic systems in the body. It is so gentle but at the same time very powerful, penetrating deeply into the tissues allowing the body to heal itself.
Every dog is different so an individual approach is important. Some are excited about a new visitor and keen to say hello, others are not so sure and will be given all the time they need to approach me and feel comfortable before starting any therapy. Whilst they are observing me, I will be observing them focusing on their muscle and structural asymmetry and assessing their gait whilst explaining the therapy in detail to yourself, taking a full medical history and generally finding out more about your dog and what makes them tick !
There are short breaks or pauses during and between sequences which allow time for the body to process the changes and respond. Dogs will sometimes initiate their own breaks by walking away or stretching before returning for more therapy. The breaks allow the dog to avoid feeling trapped or overwhelmed and gives them an "out" if required, which is important for their first experience or if they are timid or nervous.
The most important point to remember is that Canine Bowen Therapy is a safe, gentle complementary therapy and as everything in the body is inter-connected it treats the body as a whole and can resolve problems that were not initially evident to the owner or the prime reason for seeking treatment in the first place. The therapy can be used alongside veterinary care (with permission/referral).
This really is a personal choice dependent on your dog, its age and its health problems, but as a guide:
Q: My dog is currently under vet treatment - can I add Canine Bowen Therapy to help recovery?
A: It is important to recognise that I am not a veterinarian and Canine Bowen Therapy is a complementary therapy. I therefore always recommend that you consult your veterinarian for a diagnosis or check up before considering whether Canine Bowen Therapy is appropriate for your dog. This gentle but powerful therapy works very successfully alongside veterinary care.
Q: Is Canine Bowen Therapy a form of massage ?
A: In short, no. Canine Bowen Therapy involves specific cross fibre moves via fascia, muscle & tendons to stimulate the brain and body to begin healing and shifting the nervous system to rest, relax, repair and recovery mode.
Q: What if my dog is nervous with new people?
A: Your dog (and you) will be given as much time as needed to feel comfortable with me and the therapy before proceeding any further.
Q: Are you fully insured?
A: Yes, I have full and current Combined Malpractice and Public & Liability Insurance as a Health Practitioner.
Q: Where are you located?
A: I am currently living and moving between:
Lake Macquarie, NSW Australia
and
Stamford, Lincolnshire, UK

Sharyn, Garry & Denvar
We highly recommend Jenny's expertise for your beautiful pets. Jenny has been a huge help to our beautiful girl Denvar. She has hurt her legs many times over the past two years and Jenny has always come to her rescue. Sometimes she has needed a few ongoing treatments to get her better. Denvar also had a bad ear infection and after months of going to the vets, Jenny treated her and she came good. A big thank you Jenny for being the caring person you are, we really appreciate you.
Sharon & Saffron
Saffron our Schnoodle absolutely loved Jenny and benefited greatly from Jenny's treatment in her latter years. I recommend Jenny. Jenny is kind and has incredible empathy towards animals and their humans, and operates with total professionalism.
Neil, Jan & Percy
We can highly recommend Jenny. Jenny provided a huge amount of relief to our lovely old boy Percy in the latter months of his life. She treated him (and us) with care, respect and compassion.
Helen & Benji
Benji was so calm and relaxed after Jenny's visits and walked much better.
Mandy & Max
Jenny has completed two therapy sessions on our 10 year old boy and the difference is obvious to see. He is happier, wants to play more and appears less in pain, particularly in his rear spinal area. Jenny has been lovely and I recommend contacting her if your dog has pain with movement or has medical conditions resulting in pain.
Michelle, Brian & Nelson
We can't thank Jenny enough. She is such a lovely person and is wonderful with our Goldie Nelson. Treatment is gentle and helps with his arthritis.
If you have a special request, or have any questions, please send me a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
